Take time throughout the year to do the following:

  • Inspect & Repair
    • Look for signs of rot and repair if necessary
    • Inspect the ledger (the most important piece of the deck framing that attaches the deck to the house)
    • Check all joists, posts, and beams
  • Preventative Measures
    • Move pots and planters, deck tables, and chairs to different locations to prevent discoloring
    • Trim nearby bushes, to prevent damage
    • Don’t let leaves and other debris pile up on the deck

Once your deck has been built, you will need to stain and seal it within the first two weeks. From that point on you should at least wash, stain and seal it on an annual basis. You can do it more often if necessary depending on the amount of sun and weather it may endure. Around the six year mark you should give the deck a good striping and sanding prior to adding the stain for that year. Be prepared this will be a big job, and you may want to consider hiring this out to someone else that has experience and the proper tools to get the job done.

As with all maintenance, you can hire it out, or do it yourself. It can be a big job, and something you may not want to do yourself.
