Carter was born in Tampa, Florida, on December 7, 1987, the son of Jane Elizabeth (Spaulding) and Robert Gene Carter. As a child, he made several television appearances, including an episode of The Mickey Mouse Club in which he performed the “I Want Candy” rap.
His older sister Leslie died at age 13 from an accidental prescription drug overdose in 2012; her death significantly impacted Carter and his music.
