Pergola vs. Arbor
Many people use the term Pergola and Arbor interchangeably, but there is actually a difference. A pergola is a is typically a square shaped structure that has an overhead frame of open rafters or joints which is held up on four sides by posts or beams. There is typically no trellis involved with a Pergola. An arbor on the other hand is typically and archway that incorporates lattice work. The lattice is often covered in vines from top to bottom.

Pergola vs. Covered Patio
Again pergolas, and covered patios are also often used interchangeably, but are quite different although very similar. Unlike the open rafters of the pergola, a covered patio typically has a roof, and the structure is normally attached as an extension of your home. The Covered patio typically does attach to an external wall of your home and provides shade for for your patio, as well as protection for the door of your home that exits out to the patio area.

Pergola vs. Gazebo
Just like arbors, covered patios, and pergolas, Gazebos also provide shade, and a form shelter, but again different from a Pergola. Gazebos are octagon shaped, and have a domed roof that is supported by 8 symmetrical pillared columns.  A gazebo is typically built to accommodate a small gathering of people from 5-15 people.

Benefits of a Pergola
Pergolas provide the same basic function as a covered patio, however, there are some significant benefits you get by having a pergola.

  • Integration into your landscaping and garden
