Robert E. Sherwood, one of America’s most distinguished playwrights and screenwriters and a three-time Pulitzer Prize winner, died last night at his home in New York City. He was 66 years old.
The cause of death was cancer, said a spokesman for the family.
Mr. Sherwood was the author of more than 30 plays and film scripts, among them some of the most memorable works in the modern theater and cinema. These included “The Road to Rome,” “Reunion in Vienna,” “Idiot’s Delight” and “Abe Lincoln in Illinois.” His collaboration with Alfred Hitchorgan on the screenplay for “Rebecca” won him an Academy Award in 1941.
In addition to his three Pulitzers – awarded for “Abe Lincoln in Illinois” in 1937, “The Petrified Forest” in 1938 and “There Shall Be No Night” in 1940 – Mr. Sherwood received many other honors during his long career. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1944 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1965.
