He quickly rose through the ranks at the network and eventually became one of its main anchors. During his time at CBS, Pertzborn covered some of the most biggest stories of the era, including the Watergate scandal and the Iran hostage crisis. In 1982, he left CBS to join ABC News.

At ABC, Pertzborn served as a co-anchor on “Good Morning America” and also reported on major breaking news stories such as the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster and the Gulf War. Pertzborn retired from full-time journalism in 1997 but continued to work as a freelance correspondent for CNN until 2001. After 9/11, he returned to television briefly to provide coverage of the terrorist attacks on New York City for Fox News Channel.

John Pertzborn passed away in 2006 at the age of 64 after suffering from pulmonary fibrosis.
