What is Gluten-Free Pita Bread?

Why is Pita Bread Good For You?

Pita bread has a variety of health benefits that make it a great choice for those looking to add more nutritious options to their diets. For one, pita bread is low in calories and fat, as well as sodium. It’s also a good source of fiber and protein. Additionally, pita bread is made with whole wheat flour, which contains all three parts of the wheat grain – the bran, germ, and endosperm. This makes it a more nutrient-dense option than white breads, which are made with only the endosperm.

Whole grains like whole wheat have been linked to numerous health benefits, including a lower risk of heart disease, stroke, obesity, and type 2 diabetes (1, 2). What’s more, eating whole grains may also promote gut health by increasing the number of beneficial bacteria in your gut and reducing inflammation (3).

How is Pita Bread Made?

Pita bread is made from a simple dough of flour, water, yeast, and salt. Once the dough has risen, it’s formed into rounds and flattened before being baked in a hot oven. The high heat creates steam inside the dough rounds, causing them to puff up and create pockets. Once cooled slightly, the pockets can be filled with various meats, vegetables, or spreads to create a delicious and satisfying meal or snack.

Recipe

Ingredients:

1 cup tapioca flour

1/2 cup brown rice flour

1/4 cup potato starch

1 teaspoon xanthan gum

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon olive oil or vegetable shortening

3/4 cup warm water, plus more if needed

Instructions:

1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set it aside.

2. In a large bowl, whisk together the tapioca flour, brown rice flour, potato starch, xanthan gum, baking powder, and salt. Add the olive oil or vegetable shortening and use a pastry cutter to cut it into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. Slowly add the warm water to the mixture and stir until everything is evenly combined and a soft dough forms. If the dough is too dry, add additional water 1 tablespoon at a time until it comes together.

3. Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece of dough into a ball and then flatten it into a disc shape with your hands. Use a rolling pin to roll each disc out into a thin circle about 6 inches in diameter. Prick the surface of each pita all over with a fork to prevent them from puffing up too much while baking.

4. Place the pitas on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes until they are golden brown and slightly puffy. Remove from the oven and let cool before serving warm or at room temperature.”
